The 2nd Buddha in the series of 13, Monju Bosatsu, is found flanking Buddha Shaka Nyorai on the left side riding a lion. Together with Fugen Bosatsu, who is riding an elephant, these 3 are collectively known as Shaka Sanzon.
These flanking deities symbolize the virtues of Buddhism, and Monju Bosatsu is the Buddha of wisdom known in the Japanese expression, "three people together can achieve the wisdom of Monju".
