This type of Bizen Ware is fired in a climbing kiln, where it is buried in glowing embers on the floor directly under the furnace opening. A natural Sangiri pattern is formed on the bottom side, which is in contact with the floor, and simmering half-molten ash clings to the surface, making it look like the bark of the Chinese Hackberry tree. In one firing cycle with this method only a few items come out immaculately and in a good shape, so these pieces are rare and valuable.
